Find A Job: A Monstrous Task

How did the phrase find a job come into being?

Since the day man was expelled from the Garden of Eden, he had to yoke himself with the burden of life on earth. He had to make use of what was entrusted to him to rule – all creatures and his environment. To this end, we can safely say that man has conquered the world.

In his primitive days, man became the most skilful of predators. He hunted like no beast can. He explored the land in forests and prairies, rivers, lakes and the great sea. And his family feasted on his catch.

Those were both difficult and happy days. Existence was a simple matter of satisfying man’s most basic needs – appease his hunger and thirst. Less basic needs followed. His brood needed something to protect themselves from the cold, rain and the sweltering heat of the sun. So he devised ways of covering his nakedness. But man found that it was not enough. Shelter was his next concern, for the same reasons he had to provide himself raiment.

Soon, man realized that there were not only needs but also wants – for comfort, and later, even luxuries. It all started with need and craving. Having learned that satisfying his needs and wants was good, man did not want to turn back. He became selfish. He wanted to own things, animals and even people to satisfy his needs and wants. He learned to devise ways to acquire more. That began the era of commerce and trade.

Trade and industry matured to higher and higher levels of sophistication that it developed a life of its own. It needed things and other resources for its raw materials. It needed people to man its many processes, from manufacturing to selling, transporting and managing all its requirements. That is how the world is now. Trade, industry and commerce have become a “monster” that man loves. We became its factotum. And we hunt the jobs that the monster offers.

Job search, although many will not admit it, is man’s obsession. He wants to do something for another in order to be able to get something in return, employees and employers alike. So that to find a job has become man’s “ultimate goal”. It is the reason why we educate ourselves. It is the reason why we develop skills. And how to find a good job is the biggest challenge to the new graduate – whether from a formal college or university, or from an artisan guild.

In our modern world, in the era of computers and the internet, it has become an easy task to find a job. But the crucial questions are: “Do we meet the qualification requirements that these jobs demand?” Are we prepared to face the challenges of these jobs?”

If you can properly answer these questions, then, you may well be on your way to joining that mighty band of champions able to conquer the “monster” and become its master, charting its course.
